Ottawa · logo design
An Ottawa business often needs its name to read correctly in English and in French, on the same sign, in the same lockup, without one language looking like an afterthought. That is a design problem best solved in the first drawing rather than the last. Three directions, two rounds, and a file kit covering both versions.

Ottawa identity market
A bilingual wordmark is not two logos. It is one system where both versions carry equal weight, sit at matching optical size, and can appear together or separately without either looking secondary. Businesses that add the French version after the mark is locked usually end up with a smaller, thinner, visibly bolted-on second line.
The practical constraint is length. French runs longer than English for the same phrase, often noticeably, which changes the proportions of a lockup entirely. Designing with the longer version in mind produces a mark that works for both. Designing with the shorter one produces a mark that breaks.
Ottawa also skews conservative in professional presentation, particularly for businesses serving public-sector-adjacent clients. That does not mean dull, but it does mean a mark that reads as credible on a proposal cover is doing more work here than one that reads as fashionable.
How it works
Full scope on the logo design page.
An hour, sometimes less. We talk about the business, the customers, the words people already use about you, and the marks that make you wince. Whatever comes out of the call is the brief.
Three real directions, each shown with the mark in use at small and large sizes. No moodboards, no Pinterest stitching, no fifty variations of the same idea. Three honest choices to react to.
Two rounds of revision on the direction you pick. Small adjustments to weight, spacing, and proportion. The mark stops shifting and starts feeling like it has always been there.
SVG, PNG, JPG, favicon, social avatar. A one-page brand sheet with the typeface, the colour values, and where the mark should and should not go. Everything sent in a single folder.
What changes locally
An Ottawa logo engagement designs the bilingual lockup as one system from the first sketch, with the longer French version setting the proportions rather than being squeezed into an English layout. Both versions ship in the file kit at matching weight and optical size, along with the guidance on when each is used. Ownership transfers on final payment, with source files on request.
Note
Every engagement starts with a free written audit, including the Ottawa ones. If we think the budget is better spent somewhere else, we will say so before you commit to anything. See everything we do in Ottawa.

One page listing forty towns ranks for none of them. A page per neighbourhood gets flagged as spam. The level in between is where local rankings actually live, and almost nobody builds it.

No law requires it, which makes this a market decision rather than a compliance one. How to work out from your own data whether French pays for your business, and what building it properly actually involves.
