What is generative engine optimization?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of getting a business named and cited inside AI-generated answers rather than only in a list of blue links. It overlaps heavily with SEO, because most AI answers are assembled from pages retrieved by a search index.

What is genuinely different

The unit of competition. Search ranks pages, and a generative answer assembles passages. A model retrieves a few hundred words at a time, scores that fragment against the question, and quotes it. Which means a page can rank poorly overall and still be quoted constantly because one section of it answers one question unusually cleanly.

That changes how a page is written more than it changes what the site needs to be about.

What is the same work with a new label

Being crawlable, being fast, being structured, being consistent about the business name and address everywhere it appears, and being corroborated by sources other than the site itself. Those were the fundamentals before, and they are the inputs to retrieval now. A large share of what is sold as GEO is ordinary technical SEO priced differently.

What actually changes on the page

Answer first, in the first two sentences. Name the subject explicitly instead of relying on the heading above for context, because the retrieved fragment travels without it. Keep sections self-contained. Use tables and lists, which are extracted more readily than prose. And include specifics, because sentences containing a number or a named entity are quoted far more often than sentences containing an adjective.
